Self-Publish Straight to Apple’s iBook Store

By Robyn Short

There are many reasons I have been drinking the Apple, Inc. kool-aid my entire adult life, but the primary reason is that Apple examines human behavior and creates technologically accessible products to meet our lifestyle needs. The “magical and revolutionary” iPad (Yes, I do love their marketing too!) is a perfect example, as is the new iPhone 4 that launches today (in 3 hours and 45 minutes to be precise). Both of these products immerse the user in technology without the barrier of a keyboard and mouse. At the touch of a finger, we can now access our favorite movies, TV shows, music, news, bank accounts, emails, photos, video … the list goes on and on. And, now the iPad and the new iOS4 software (you do not have to purchase the new iPhone to download the software update) for the iPhone makes self-publishing easier than ever before. I am more motivated than ever to complete “The Self-Publisher’s Guide” simply because I want to see my book sitting on Apple’s fabulous virtual bookstore shelf.

Apple Makes Self-Publishing Easy

If you want to see your book sitting on the iBook® store shelf too, the first step is to establish a distribution channel with Apple’s iTunes. Simply complete an online application. Apple’s self-publishing criteria is as follows:

  • Each book must have 13-digit ISBN.
  • The book must be submitted in an ePub format.
  • The book must validate against an epubcheck 1.0.5
  • The book must not contain unmanifested files.
  • As a publisher, you will need a U.S. Tax ID number (also called an EIN).
  • Apple requires publishers to have a valid iTunes Store account with a credit card on file.
  • In order to upload your files, you will need an Intel-based Mac running OS X 10.5 or later.

If the above bullet points sound Greek to you, know worries. goodmedia’s self-publishing division can provide the production and creative services necessary to convert your Word doc manuscript into a professional e-book, complete with layout and cover design. We work with small presses and first-time publishers every day. If you need help obtaining an ISBN or want to register your book with the Library of Congress, we can help you do that. We can also help you market your new e-book. And, since goodmedia operates exclusively on Apple computers, we have the technology necessary to upload your files to iTunes.

Start Making iMoney

Once you have completed the application, Apple’s online agreement allows you to sell your book(s) in the iBook store in several countries — you choose the countries you want to sell in.  You set the price for your new title. And then, go tell all your friends to download it to their iPhone, iPad, MacBook, iMac — and yes, their PCs too.

It is really that simple! And, that is why I love Apple!
